Carl,
My point has been made! Drummers and Bassists don't need a solo
spot, 'cause the good ones are soloing all the time. Woody is
carrying on the Allman tradition, as Berry was a lead bass player.
My personal all-time fave bassist is Tim Bogert, though I haven't
heard much from him lately. He WAS soloing all the time, and driving
the band simultaneously. I always considered Albert the
personification of a lead drummer. The first 3 BOC albums, his
playing was so creative that he never seemed to be repeating himself,
all the while somehow keeping the band anchored to the song...
