How come none of you slide afficianados have mentioned one of the
best (albeit unorthodox) slide dudes ever--Jeff Beck?  He did some
conventional blues stuff in the Yardbirds, but then took it over the
edge on his solo stuff,  c.f. 'Shapes of things' off 'Truth' and
'Livin' Alone' from BBA.  BTW, saw Warren Haynes in a club up here
(Gov't Mule is playing in Dec.) and he's an amazing slider, fits in
right nice with the Allmans.
