I thought he was being homophobic:

"this is a very heavy microphone stand ...
 no queen could manage this..."

i.e. only a "real" man would be strong enough to lift it...

I think there's an anecdote in Kris Tait's book that recounts how Calvert
insulted a French music biz personage (I think), persistently suggesting
he was gay, etc.  Calvert seemed to be a pretty weird bloke.
