Although I'm still using elm myself (not much longer I hope), I think the
formating features are important, just like modern web sites use graphical
extensions over and above the old text sites to convey more information
(is a picture really worth 1000 words?) Eventually the tools should allow
us to access this augmentation on a more "universal" level.

At least the data these packages send is appended and not imbedded within
the text (like most word processors) so that the message is readable.

Remember: The greatest thing about standards in this industry is that
there are so many to choose from!
