The Brain Surgeons will be headlining Rockrgrl Night at the Macintosh Music
Fest, Monday, July 15 at the New Music Cafe on Canal Street in NYC.
This should be a great night-- and given the great deal of the MacFest-
believe a $45 pass will get you into a week's worth of club gigs and events.
They have a website at www.thegig.om (tho they haven't been so swift about
posting all the up-to-date line-up info). And judging by the way the gigs
have been going (anyone not in the filled-to-capacity Mamakin by the 11 pm
set-time last week, was locked out on the sidewalk in a line that stretched
down the block) it should be a hot one--

In any case, opening for the Brain Surgeons will be (along with some info for
the inveterate question-askers in the crowd):
The Finch Family
(a new Boston band, fronted by the well-regarded Lizzie Borden)
Swish
(on Don Fleming's Instant Mayhem label, also from Boston, a trio featuring
onetime Helium bassist Lori Martin and Dinosaur Jr drummer Patrick Murphy)
Faith
(Black Rock Coalition faves, now a trio, whose trials as a fourpiece were
profiled by Lisa Jones in the Voice piece anthologized in Rock, She Wrote)
The Cucumbers
(a great, joyous band, who rock harder live than on the recent Zero Hour
album that began as a bunch of overdubbed demos upon leader Jon Fried's
recovery from a health crisis--his chest Xrays make up the cover art)

and special guests
Genya Ravan
Penny Arcade

For more (not to mention fairly outrageous) takes on the latter duo, check
out Legs McNeil's Uncensored Oral History of Punk, a doorstopper-sized tome
just published by Grove/Atlantic

All in all, well worth making vacation plans for.
See ya there
