Try these albums for variation/sci-fi,
they are good starting points.

Hall of The Mountain Grill
Levitation
Quark, Strangeness & Charm
Warrior on the Edge of Time

Much HW stuff is very inaccessible, and, frankly, the droning monotony
of the long jams of much of their stuff is because (in the classic era,
anyways) its music created by people on hallucinogenics for people on
hallucinogenics (and mighty fun it is)...... they are more of a
psychedelic punk-band than a prog-band.
At least in my opinion.
