Well, ANY grouping of notes is technically, a song. Or even the
same note played over and over [c.f. industrial, sampled stuff!].
And, true, if you've read any interviews with Satch, he truly
believes he has a vision for the stuff he plays [though he's kind of
a space cadet!]. So, in terms of his creative process, sure they're
songs. To borrow your argument, then I'd have to say 'Buck's Boogie'
isn't a song! And, since classical music doesn't usually have
lyrics...
My argument should have run more like: I consider Buck to be on a
higher plane than guys who simply want an excuse to blow their chops.
But then there's 'Buck's Boogie...Which is essentially a live song
[or intended as one]. And, people do expect a little instrumental
flash at a concert. Though the punk and to some extent, alternative
movements seem opposed to it. And again, I listen to the chops-
meisters quite a bit, and really, tied with Buck, my favorite gtr
player is Jeff Beck, who could arguably be considered the Ayatullah
of post-modern shredding. In fact, I listen to him more than anyone
else [well, tied with BOC].
So, point taken!
