The
Brain Surgeons, "Trepanation" (Cellsum Records; running
time: 49.51, 14 tracks) @@@
You
don't have to be a brain surgeon to realize that the music scene
has been lacking a true hard rock band for quite some time.
"Trepanation," the Brain Surgeon's second release, fills the
void with 14 songs varying from hard to light rock. The band,
featuring the husband-and-wife team Al Bouchard (formerly
of Blue Oyster Cult) and Deborah Frost, has talented
musicians who sparkle on a number of instruments. Bouchard
handles drums, guitars, keyboards, saxophone, ebow, and vocals
while Frost sings, plays guitar, percussion, and clarinet.
Rounding
out the band is Billy Hilfiger (brother of Tommy, the fashion
designer) on lead, rhythm, and acoustic guitars and vocals; Peter
Bohovesky on lead and rhythm guitars, vocals, and trumpet, and
David Hirschberg on bass, sax and percussion.
"A
Kiss is a Promise" and "Everything is Blue" are delicate,
mood-changing ballads, while "My Civilization" and "Happy New
Year" show off a mean, slow rock sound. Mixed in the collection
are fun, light-rock songs reminiscent of the Pretenders and The
Moody Blues ("Sally," "If You Come Close").
Showing
yet another angle of their rock sound, "Bad Habit" sounds
like the Doors' "Love Her Madly." The band also covers Robert Johnson's
"Stones In My Passageway" with a destinctive Led Zeppelin flair.
Frost,
a vocal cross between Alannah Myles and Ozzy Osbourne, grabs a
listener's ear on "Gimme Nothin.' " Bouchard wrote most of the
album's songs and his drum sound is hard and steady. His brother
and ex-Blue Oyster comrade, Joe Bouchard, contributes a tremendous
mandolin intro on "A Kiss Is A Promise."
With
varying degrees of rock intensity, this family effort has the
cure for what ails starving rock fans.
