Origins of the BOC symbol

At a major Amtgard (outdoor live-action foam swords & sorcery) I
saw someone with the BOC symbol on his shield.  I approached him
about it (his name was Zodiac) and he claimed no knowledge of BOC
or their symbol, he said it was an alchemical symbol he happened
to like.
