Richard,
It's a little gizmo that you hold over the guitar's string.  It has
powerfull magnets in it that somehow get the string to vibrate by
itself, so you get infinite sustain.  A great effect, but you're
limited speed-wise, as you can only work one string at a time, and
you can't work your whammy bar while using it--unless you've got 3
hands!   Hamer and Fernandez
have built gtrs with a built-in device that does the same thing, and
I believe all strings can be used.  Never tried one, myself, though I
still have my e-bow, and use it some to this day...
