You're right, it is a well-egineered analogue recording. The engineer was
one Alan Parsons, whose credits also include the Beatles _Abbey Road_.
IMHO, both albums sound better on vinyl.

As for the advent of digital recording, I suspect it was applied to jazz
or classical before rock, though _Levitation_ is clearly an early
application of the technology. Maybe it was Ginger Baker's doing? BTW, on
Frank Zappa's _You Can't do That on Stage Anymore Vol. 1_, the track "You
Didn't Try to Call Me" was recorded July 3, 1980, on Sony's new PCM 1600
2-channel digital recording system, in an "instant studio" set up in a
dressing room.
