Styx was amazing, it was like they put out Paradise Theater last week.
Tori and I saw two of the NYC area shows (one indoor and one outdoor),
and they were both excellent, excellent shows. The only downer was
that Tommy, while telling the story of how they got back toegther,
teased the audience with riffs from Castle Walls and Man in The
Wilderness, but they didn't actually play the songs...
Kansas, I'm sorry to say, was an altogether different story. The
instrumentalists were in fine form, but the vocalist seriously needed
to be shot. They'd apparently found themselves some rock-n-roll d00d
to fill in for their missing original vocalist... the guy pranced and
over-emoted his way through every great Kansas song until I felt
almost physically ill.
These were both large shows, btw; the indoors one was sold out and
packed to the rafters, the outdoors one was in bad weather (which
miraculously cleared up half an hour into the show), so it was "only"
about 90% full. And the audience was insanely into it, for fans of a
band that has been out of commision for more than 10 years. Or maybe
that's why...
