I think the lyrics are a pretty straight interpretation of the film.
The guy went mad because he saw things he wasn't meant to see, etc.
I'd hate to start a fresh round of Shirley-bashing, but I guess I
could see him getting the decade wrong, just out of sloppiness or
apathy.
