Yaay - I've had more completely unplayable CD's than vinyl.  Asmall amount
of silver cleaner such as "Silvo" can help by taking the "sharp" edges off
scratches, thus allowing the mechanism to track through - don't use coarser
abrasives like "Brasso" though!
