Well Hawkwind have played their first ever gig in the Southern Hermisphere
and despite some odd gremlins in the sound they played a blistering 2 hour
set.
We arrived at the Waihi Beach Hotel with a large sign outside that read "The
Legendary Hawkwind DIRICT from the UK". Sure as eggs not much has changed in
small town NZ.
The crowd was around 200 people and some had made the trip from as far south
as Wellington (6/8 hour road trip), Napier, Palmerston North, Hamilton and
Auckland. The setting was very laid back and the band mixed with fans in a
friendly and informal setting.
New bassist Steve Taylor admitted to some nerves before the concert as it
was his first ever live gig with the band but by the end of the night he had
a smile on his face. The band were called back for an encore where they
performed "Masters Of The Universe". I will attempt to post the complete
setlist at a later date.
The trip home was marred by a serious road accident in the gorge that is the
only way in and out of Waihi from the north and all traffic had to do a
u-turn and take the long way home which was about a 4 trip to Hamilton
instead the usual 2 hours.
The next night it was up to Auckland with another carload of us and this
time the venue was perfect. A big stage setup, lightshow, Kris Tait with her
fire eating and Hawkwind with an awesome 2 hour set that completely blew
everyone away. The sound was very loud and even the band came off stage
saying it was too loud but they were in fine form and the 400+ people at the
Powerstation were treated to a mix of old numbers and new material such as
"Love In Space" and "Freefall". A number of people made the comment that
they were very modern sounding and that is what is so timeless about
Hawkwind. The band were called back for an encore where they again did
"Masters Of The Universe"
The t-shirt and CD stand did good business after the event and their return
to the Powerstation on the 26th February should see a full house.
Next stop New Plymouth on the 10th Feb where they will also have the full
arsenal of the "Solar Fire Lightshow" which arrives in NZ tomorrow (Monday
7th Feb).
