It doesn't use any part of the MIDI standard that didn't exist 15 years
ago.  It can send out pitch-bend (in addition to note) information up to
200 times per second with up to 14-bit accuracy.  Granted, that will
probably make the underpowered microprocessor in your 80s-technology MIDI
synth blow its mind, but note transitions should be as smooth as using the
familiar pitch wheel.
