Newcastle also has an excellent local public transportation system---the
Tyneside Metro---which integrates with the local bus system.  Newcastle
has a major rail station, and also has an airport with (if memory
serves) a station on the aforementioned Metro system.  It is entirely
feasible to fly into Newcastle via, say, London Heathrow or Gatwick.
(I have flown Roanoke, VA -> ... -> Newcastle, UK, checking my luggage
only at Roanoke!)  Teesside Airport, near Middlesbrough, is another
close regional airport, if you want more options.  It has a railway
station (or more accurately, a halt:), and you could fairly painlessly
take the train up to Newcastle from there.
