Hi Folks...
The damn university server was down again (happens every spring break it
seems), so I'm just catching up with hundreds of messages...
Let's see, where to start...
Top 5 HW albums...
1. Warrior on the Edge of Time
2. Levitation
3. Space Ritual
4. Quark, Strangeness, and Charm
5. Electric Tepee (since Palace Springs is more 'old' stuff)

SPACE ROCK is exactly what *I* say it is. :)
Actually, it's whatever Marc Power says it is in his Space Rock Manifesto,
so he gets blamed for it.

I can't believe people listen to as much as 30%-50% of Hawkwind....that's
crazy! :)
I suppose I listen to Hawkwind CDs (on average) about as much as my other
CDs, and my Hawkwind CDs (including solo works, but not Motorhead) probably
only represent about 7-8% of my collection. But then I've been listening to
many of these albums since 1980 (when I heard them *a lot* more, since I had
many fewer things), whereas now at least 50% of my collection is stuff from
just the last 4 years or so. But still, even spending 20% or more on any
given band to me is bordering on obsession. :) To each his own, I
suppose...I have known people (even 'intelligent' adults...not just
teenagers) who will play the same song over about 4 times in a row (and I
don't mean musicians trying to learn it, or transcribe it...just for
enjoyment). That would drive me nuts! I've done it just a few times to try
to write down the lyrics...it's risky 'cause I threaten becoming extremely
bored with it in no time.
I wish I was that addicted to Hawkwind alone...then I would be happy with
just a couple hundred CDs. :)
My listening profile (as of today)....
Hawkwind, 'trad. space rock', free festy bands - 20%
Electronic Post-rock - 15% ('cause it's a relatively new part of my collection')
Krautrock - 10%
Stoner rock - 10%
Classic rock - 10%
Heavy Metal - 10%
Progressive - 10%
Shoegazer/Dream-space - 5%
Alternative - 5%
Folk, Pop, Reggae, Jazz, Jam - 5%
so about 50% SPACE ROCK, given the most generalized description...but again,
only a fraction is Hawkwind. That doesn't mean it's not head-and-shoulders
about the rest (I think it is, but for a few other select bands, namely
Gong, Amon Duul II, and AgFree)....I just feel the need to hear it less and
less as the years go by. And I get much more enjoyment hearing Space Ritual
Remastered once every few months (when I say to myself...."Ah, you know,
this other new stuff I've been hearing all the time, as good as it is, isn't
quite like this old masterpiece") than if I played it to death still (twenty
years after hearing it for the first time). I once lived in a house dubbed
'Terrapin Station', and so I know what happens to some people when they
become *way* too obsessed with one (not-very-good) band...and that is, they
no longer become 'music' fans, but just 'fans for the sake of being fans'.
Whatever that means.
Grakkl (FAA)
P.S. I'd actually moved out of the house before I even knew what Terrapin
Station referred to...not that I hadn't heard enough Dead by then to make me
vomit.
