Prime Minister Tony Blair, suffering his worst drop in popularity since
the 1997 election of New Labour, has decided to emulate previous Labour
Prime Minister Harold Wilson's granting of Knighthoods to The Beatles.

Tony Blair is planning to announce a small number of rock and pop icons
in the Honours list for the Queen's Birthday. Strongly tipped are Paul
Weller and Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster who are known to be favourites of the
Prime Minister. In his youth Tony Blair played guitar in a band and a
few years ago donated his guitar to the Royal Scottish Museum for their
modern icons exhibit.

The Prime Minister should however note that while Harold Wilson's move
did improve his image with Britain's youth, it produced anger amongst
some of the older generation, some of whom returned their medals to
Downing Street in protest. A spokesman at Downing Street pointed out
that the music industry was one of Britain's great export successes and
that it was felt that this should be recognised in New Labour's efforts
to promote commerce and business.
