HW:Summer Camp

This was the best weekend I have had all year. And not just because it was
Hawkwind but because it was such a good social gathering. I was a bit
disappointed at first because the amount of people who turned up seemed
smaller than I expected but it just got better and better for me.

Everyone there was very friendly, nice relaxed atmosphere. There were no
thieves or blaggers which is the main reason I won't go to most festivals
anymore, none of that squalid paranoia you get at Glastonbury. This
festival was like Canterbury last year. Let's have more of the same.

We got there a little late for Litmus who I wanted to see but a BOC-L
lurker (hello Richard ??? have you come down yet?) introduced me to the
band so I'll catch them in London some time. Hawkwind played very well on
Saturday night and the sound was crystal clear. Not quite as good as
Canterbury though which seemed much fresher at the time. The highlight for
me was watching Huw LL and Martin Griffin jamming with some other guys on
Sunday night. Martin Griffin is probably my favourite Hawkwind drummer and
I've never actually seen him before so this was a magic moment for me. I
realised who he was halfway through the first song. With style like that I
could have watched him play the drums for hours. This set looked to me like
some kind of late 70s festival jam so if someone recorded it...please stick
it on a weird tape.

The weather was almost perfect and at night the cafe was the place to be
when it got cold. The location was brilliant. When the bands weren't
playing we spent the daytimes down at either Sidmouth or Beer hanging out
on the beach. I met loads of people so 'hello' to all who know me. A
special radio one style shout goes out to Rob Dreamworker and Stephe
Lindas, Alan and Andrea who me, Steve and Ben had a right laugh with all
weekend.

On the way back we popped into Stonehenge to watch the tourists turn around
the stones. The mechanisation achieved by English Heritage was almost
perfect. Ben swapped his english soul for some souvenirs in the shop
afterwards. Now I am back in the city and it is shite. So I hope that the
organisers at least made a small profit out of this so that you will
consider putting it on again next year.
