        What do your 4 favorite bassists have in common?  They're all
        _songwriters_.  Each of these guys contributed significantly, if
        not completely, to their bands' songwriting.  Perhaps that's the
        common thread.

        I'm glad that someone else pointed out Jason Newsted's early
        playing (when he, too, wrote the songs and was allowed to play).
