Halford's singing's silly but competent--but there's also some live

bonus material, on which he sounds *awful*. Was he always like this or
did they just have a very thin selection of material to use as bonuses,
do you suppose?
At one time Halford was THE voice of Heavy Metal whom all others were judged
against. The only others who came close were; Gillian, Freddy Mercury and
Robert Plant (although by this time Plant was in serious decline). Halford
began loosing the hi notes in concert somewhere after Screaming for Vengeance,

which by that time they were the hottest act in town, due to a series of
'Hit'
singles and continuous radio play.
One of the greatest rock shows I've ever saw was JP at the old Academy of
Music on 14th St in NYC around 1977. The billing was(from top to bottom) REO
Speedwagon, Starz, and JP at the bottom of the bill.
It was a July evening and it was billed as a BARGAIN Night as the tix sold
for only $3.50. The temperature outside had to be close to 100 degrees F and
inside was at least 10 degrees hotter..and for $3.50 a head management saw NO
reason to put on the AC. Priest played most of Sad Wings and the place went
completely mental. I remember Halford had long flowing red hair and he was
dressed in chiffon and he acted, aaaa, how can I say this...gay. That's why
my
friends and I were always surprised that everyone else was surprised when RH
came 'out'. The next tour, JP headlined and had switched the whole
persona to
the campy, leather, S&M thing, which was immediately copied by 100's of
up
and coming heavy metal acts.
I remember seeing Iron Maiden open for the Priest with the EXACT same stage
setup, runways at each side of the stage coming up behind the drummer,
strobes, everything was the same except smaller for Iron Maiden.
I saw the Priest last month in NY and they were GREAT...Halford got his
voice back or was it just trickery.
Anyway it was a fantastic show.
Since the Hawks were on a long hiatus from the states that wouldn't end
till
around '89 --the Priest filled that void, for a few years anyway, very,
very
nicely.

<ObCD: Space Ritual - _Otherworld_, which I only just got and which is
<confusing me by being not bad enough that I'm not entirely certain it
<might not be good. A terrible string of negatives, but I was truly
<expecting it to suck, and it fails to do so. More on this I expect...

I thought this was Nik's best work since Sphinx (both). Finally I think he

may be over the whole, 'I'm the spirit of Hawkwind' crap that's
been hindering
his artistic progress for years. This is a good one.
