This is just a list of all the histories and sleeve notes that I've 
come across recently together with some personal subjective comments 8-)
It's certainly not a complete list but may, I hope, be of interest.


ITALIAN LYRIC BOOK  (history - info by Brian Tawn up to 1991)
       Brian Tawn in relaxed and reflective mood.   Info includes the
early years and some background stories, line-ups, the band's 
philosophy towards the music they make (or maybe that should be Dave
Brock's philosophy?) and also descriptions of some of the stageshows
and performances.    It slides rapidly through the late 70s and 80s
Includes the Family Tree up to Dec. 1979

APPROVED HISTORY BOOKLET (history - info by Brian Tawn up to 1985)
          Very detailed personnel history.   Background history for each
track included on the triple Anthology LPs.   Informative, factual and
very little gossip!

HAWKWIND OFFICIAL HISTORY info. sheet (history - by Brian Tawn up to 1985)
         Unusual angle concentrating on the different recording lables
the band has played under and the differences in attitudes that have 
formed the background and, ultimately influenced, the various releases.

GUINNESS BOOK OF ROCK STARS  (history - compiled by Rees and Crampton up
                                   to 1990 but in effect only 1982)
          Short but informative personnel history and discography
organised on a year by year basis.   Detail stops after 1982 and there
are some horrible errors e.g. "Griffiths" for "Griffin" and "Davis"
for "Davey".   [*** I think this may be the one currently in the 
archive  ****]

CASTLE COMMUNICATIONS 3CD ANTHOLOGY BOOKLET  (history - by Brian Tawn
                                   up to 1991)
         A personal, flamboyant description of early Hawkwind performance
and music with some of the background behind the events and band changes.
Bit vague after 1985.

THIS IS HAWKWIND - DO NOT PANIC book (history by Kris Tait)
        - Haven't read this yet  8-(

RIDICULE - (sleeve notes and CD booklet)  info by Brian Tawn but he is
                                            not given any credit.  Up to 1988
       Basic, factual informative rundown of events, personnel changes
and album releases.   Probably the best of all the sleeve notes - pity it
and the tracks on the album were all plagiarised.

STASIS - (sleeve notes and CD booklet) info by Paul Cox up to 1988 but in
                                          effect only 1977
        Detailed personnel and track histories behind each of the tracks
chosen for the compilation as well as a note of the tours undertaken by
the band.   Vague after 1977.

SPIRIT OF THE AGE - (CD booklet)  info by Brian Tawn (The Charisma Years
                                          1976-1979
      Short but interesting Brock and Calvert background together with
some of the reasoning behind the making of Astounding Sounds and
QS&C.

HAWKWIND THE COLLECTION - (sleeve notes and CD booklet) info by Chris White
                                of Music Week   up to present but vague
        Short, broad and generalised history.   A selected list of LPs is
given.  Personnel changes concentrate on the period 1970-75

NIGHT OF THE HAWK - (sleeve notes and CD booklet) info by Powerhouse ??
         Detailed track history of each track used in the compilation
together with some of the background and a note of the line-ups.  Limited
but informative.

BRITISH TRIBAL MUSIC - (sleeve notes and CD booklet)  info by Jeff Garcia
        Gives 1987 line-up but is otherwise a brief load of fuzzy
nonsense.  "Through the dusks of time from the mists of West London 
emerged the supreme Psychadelic Warlords..."    Heck *I* write stuff as
bad as that!!

HAWKWIND ANTHOLOGY II - (sleeve notes?? CD booklet)  info(?!) by Geoff Banks
      Eccentric, hyperbole.   Completely uninformative but fun.
Wierd!, man.... 

FRIDAY ROCK SHOW (LIVE AT READING '86)  (CD booklet notes by Malcolm Dome)
      Wordy garbage with dreadful errors.   Alan Davey is listed as a 
drummer and Danny Thomas (sic.!) on keyboards.    "Hawkwind's... own
inimitable interpretation of the ebbing curds and flowing wheys within
the Hard Rock genre ... have eschewed fashion [and they have become] a 
British institution performing at a British Institution."   
I'd love to hear Dave Brock's comments on this one!

REPEAT PERFORMANCES (ROCK LEGENDS)     (sleeve notes - not sure who they're
                                            by)
      A short history of the band which I just glanced at once.   Don't
think it offered much.



also:  the Japanese booklet which comes with the CDs.   Has anyone managed
       to get this translated yet?
