Hawklords Footage and Top 10 Prog Rock

Hi,

I vaguely remember a rumour that the Hawklords were to be featured on the
Old Grey Whistle Test in UK about the time of the album and tour. If they
did appear I didn't catch the programme even though I watched it for a few
weeks before losing interest cos most of the stuff on it was dire
(according to me). I also remember that Annie Nightingale had taken over as
presenter from Bob Harris at this time and the emphasis was shifting
towards 'new wave' artists.

One thing I did catch on the show was the UK TV debut of Tubeway Army (Gary
Numan's band). I thought at the time that Numan was very heavily influenced
by Bob Calvert and on the show he looked very similar to Calvert in the
Hawklord's clip on the Top 10 show.

I finally went back and looked at the rest of the show on video a couple of
days ago. Most of the rest of the bands I found to be highly embarassing
(but it does make me wonder what the average viewer made of Hawkwind).

A couple of thoughts struck me though. Most of the other bands came across
as typical public school boy types trying to be outrageous (worst of all
Genesis, although I'm biased as I have never liked them).

Also interesting was the fact that there were no direct contributions from
any Floyd members. It must have been a real downer for the show's makers
not to get anything back form their number 1 group.

Mark
