I can't single out a particular keyboard moment
because I like them all. I think Allen was a
master at finding the part that would work best
within a particular song. And he was content to
lay back and support the song rather than continually
trying to show off. It takes a true pro to approach
his work with that attitude...
Guitar-wise? Well, live, at least during the past
10 years or so, I'd say Allen was a helluva keyboardist!
But on record he was obviously all over the first few
albums, and again, always worked to further the song
rather than himself. Perhaps his best attribute as
a guitarist is that you can't point out a lot of
showoff moments, but you can point to a lot of great songs
made better for his having played on them...
As for Patti Smith? Well, better him than me!

I really like Allen's piano intro to "Joan Crawford." Of course I'm a sucker for over the top piano, just like Mike Garson's piano on "Aladdin Sane."
The last time I saw BOC (with Danny Miranda and Bobby Rondinelli) I was really impressed how much guitar Allen played, to me he was the band's secret weapon. And he dated Patti Smith, too. Too cool.

Allen doesn't have a "Former Members" page on the History section of the
site yet. Perhaps it's still in the process of being written.
Either way, a really lousy way to bid farewell to someone who has been
there almost always since the beginning. This should be fun:
What is everyone's favorite Allen Lanier keyboard and/or guitar moment?
At very least, his vest and a pack of smokes should be enshrined in the
rock n roll hall of fame.
